Arcadia Winds - Evocations

According to legend, Carl Nielsen said “you can take the flute out of Arcadia, but you can never take Arcadia out of the flute.” Inspired by this connection to the mythical paradise where nature spirits roam free, Arcadia Winds presents Evocations, a concert in two distinct parts.

The first half brings nature to life through music, opening with Pēteris Vasks’ improvisational Music for Fleeting Birds, capturing the rhapsodic quality of birdsong. Anne Cawrse’s Honeybee blends buzzing harmonies with soaring, wistful melodies, and Holly Harrison’s Phasmid Funk playfully imagines interactions between a snail-like horn and stick-insect bassoon in a funky, bluesy style.

The second half explores different times and places, featuring Del Aguila’s Wind Quintet No. 2, an epic journey through time and space in four movements. Valerie Coleman’s Red Clay & Mississippi Delta, concludes the exquisite program, evoking the American South through virtuosic blues, from riverside juke joints to the rich, dark colour of the local clay soil.
